Our kids love love love to read!

Spanish book fair came to Flynn

Here's part of our parent team working hard and having fun selling books at our Spanish language book fair. This is the first time we have hosted a Let's Read in Spanish book fair and it was a great success! Lots of beautiful books were bought by parents, teachers and visitors from our community and the other schools. And now Miss Lisa will have several hundred dollars to spend on Spanish language books too for the library and school.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin!

Story time at Flynn. Monday morning. All over the school, lessons stopped and children listened quietly and attentively to our volunteer parents reading picture books, and chapter books, and poetry, in Spanish and English.

Chains, chains, chains

All around school, children are busily making paper chains. Each link represents a picture book or chapter read. Each grade has a different color. By the end of this week, the hallways of Flynn will look like a carnival!

Singing their hearts out for the Read-a-thon

We were treated to a wonderful performance by our 5th graders during morning circles on Thursday morning.

Characters are like cakes! Ivy and Bean author Annie Barrows comes to Flynn

A library full of children and parents listened with rapt attention this evening to Annie Barrows, author of the Ivy and Bean series and The Magic Half, as she read from her newest book in which the girls become obsessed with cheese or more particularly the wax around the cheese.

Not reading this time but WRITING!

The Flynn 500 challenge! Can our kids write 500 books in two weeks? That's what our lovely librarian Miss Lisa has challenged them to do. Today was the writers workshop and lots of busy book making and writing was going on.

Where are you reading?

Here's a keen reader from our school! Send us pictures of your children reading and we'll post them on the blog!

Over 10500 picture books or chapters?: Classroom goals explained

Each class in our school has set their own classroom goal. If they hit their target then they get a popsicle party. Our children are ambitious and love to read so their targets are high. The school is an elementary school, many of our children are just getting started as readers and there is a wide range of ages and abilities. All reading counts - parents reading to children, children reading to other children, children reading to themselves. Each unit is a picture book or a chapter in a chapter book and each unit gets a coloured link in chain. Watch this space for pictures of the chains hung in the school hallways.

And don't forget you can support the children by sponsoring them, buying raffle tickets, or donating here on the website via the JustGive button.
